(CNN) – È finalmente arrivata la fine dell’esenzione dalle tasse per i viaggi nell’Unione Europea.
L’UE ha annunciato il lancio del tanto atteso programma di esenzione dal visto, l’ETIAS, che debutterà nel maggio 2023.
Sebbene l’ETIAS non sia la stessa cosa di un visto – è più veloce, si fa online e non richiede informazioni biometriche – c’è comunque una procedura e un costo per acquisirlo, un po’ come il sistema degli Stati Uniti, l’ESTA.
L’ETIAS, acronimo di European Travel Information and Authorization System (Sistema europeo di informazione e autorizzazione ai viaggi), era stato previsto per la fine del 2022.
I viaggiatori dell’UE sono esenti e godono della libertà di movimento all’interno del blocco, consentendo loro di trascorrere tutto il tempo che desiderano in molti Paesi. Anche i residenti nell’UE saranno esenti.
Ma per tutti gli altri che entrano nel blocco da un Paese che prima non richiedeva un visto, l’ETIAS sarà obbligatorio. La mossa riguarda circa 60 Paesi, tra cui gli Stati Uniti e il Regno Unito, che hanno perso la libertà di circolazione dopo la Brexit. Non cambia nulla per coloro che in precedenza avevano bisogno di un visto per entrare.
Il processo di richiesta avverrà tramite un “sistema informatico ampiamente automatizzato”, con l’approvazione concessa “entro pochi minuti” per circa il 95% dei richiedenti, secondo una nuova nota dell’UE. Il tempo massimo necessario per l’approvazione potrebbe essere fino a un mese in “casi molto eccezionali”. Chiunque venga respinto avrà il diritto di fare ricorso.
L’autorizzazione ETIAS è valida per un numero illimitato di ingressi nell’arco di tre anni. Tuttavia, i titolari devono rispettare le norme sull’immigrazione e sul superamento dei limiti di soggiorno. Attualmente, i cittadini di Paesi terzi non possono soggiornare più di 90 giorni nel blocco nella sua interezza, per ogni periodo di 180 giorni.
Il costo: 7 euro (7,35 dollari) per chi ha un’età compresa tra i 18 e i 70 anni. Non è ancora chiaro se gli altri avranno una tariffa ridotta o potranno fare domanda gratuitamente. In confronto, gli Stati Uniti chiedono 21 dollari per un’autorizzazione ESTA.
La data di inizio delle domande non è ancora stata annunciata.

(CNN) — It’s finally here: the end of fee-free travel to the European Union. The EU has announced the launch of its long-awaited visa waiver scheme, ETIAS, to debut in May 2023.While ETIAS is not the same as a visa — it is quicker, done online, and requires no biometric information — there is still a procedure and a cost to acquiring it, rather like the United States’ scheme, ESTA.ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, had previously been slated for a late 2022 debut.
EU travelers are exempt, and have freedom of movement around the bloc, allowing them to spend as much time as they want in many countries. EU residents will also be exempt.But for everyone else entering the bloc from a country which didn’t previously require a visa, the ETIAS will be obligatory. The move affects around 60 countries including the US and the UK, which lost freedom of movement after Brexit. Nothing changes for those who previously needed a visa to enter.
The application process will be via a “largely automated IT system,” with approval granted “within minutes,” for an estimated 95% of applicants, according to a new memo issued by the EU. The maximum time needed for approval could be up to a month in “very exceptional cases.” Anyone whose application is denied will have the right to appeal.ETIAS authorization be valid for an unlimited number of entries over three years. However, holders must abide by immigration and overstay rules. Currently, third-party nationals cannot stay more than 90 days in the bloc in its entirety, for every 180 day period.
The cost: €7 ($7.35) for those aged between 18 and 70. It’s not yet clear if others will have a reduced rate or will be able to apply for free. In comparison, the US charges $21 for an ESTA authorization.The start date for applications has not yet been announced.
